SCOLIOSIS

CORRECTION

How to tell if your spine is misaligned?

spine unbalance.jpeg

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS DEFORMED SPINES?

Always not too late to know

Not everyone has a straight spine. Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine in which an abnormal curvature of the back appears. Normally, this type of deformation will be to the right or left, sometimes including the spinal state of the spine.

Normally, our spine should appear straight when viewed from the front because our body is symmetrical. People with scoliosis develop additional curves to either side of the body, and the bones of the spine twist on each other, forming a C or an S-shaped or scoliosis curve in the spine.

Scoliosis is about two times more common in girls than boys. It can be seen at any age, but it is most commonly occurs in adults and adolescents.

However, the majority of people have no known symptoms or feel pain, so many people do not know that they have scoliosis.

Beware of your daily bad posture

Posture is more important than many people realise. Sitting or standing in the right position helps to make sure our bodies function properly.

If you work in an office or frequently spend long periods of time driving, it's likely that you may well have poor posture. Bad posture occurs when your spine is held in unnatural positions, putting stress on your joints, muscles and vertebrae. Slouching in your chair, hunching over your keyboard, or looking down at your mobile phone for extended periods can cause a build-up of pressure on these tissues.

Lower back, neck, shoulder, and even arm pain can be linked to bad posture, and it can lead to even more severe, painful and visible symptoms such as hyperkyphosis - a condition where the thoracic spine (upper back) develops a forward-curved posture.

Can not underestimate the problem of scoliosis in adolescents

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of scoliosis and typically affects children who are at least 10 years old. The term adolescent means that a patient is not yet skeletally mature, meaning that they are still growing.

First, it will probably affect the height development, cause low back pain, uneven leg length, a tilted pelvis, and also the uneven shoulder.

In severe cases, it may even affect the child's development, causing the child's memory loss and fatigue easily, legs to become weak and excretion dysfunction. It will have a serious impact on the child's psychology that might cause low self-esteem and fear.

What are risk factors for scoliosis?

In most cases, scoliosis is not painful, but there are certain types of scoliosis than can cause back pain, rib pain, neck pain, muscle spasms, and abdominal pain. If the scoliosis is more severe, it can make it more difficult for the heart and lungs to work properly. This can cause shortness of breath and chest pain.

For example, if you can't walk far, you panting and your heart is beating faster than normal, or you can't walk up two or three floors and have to rest for a while to continue. The reduction of abdominal space will lead to a decrease in appetite, which will affect pregnancy in severe cases.

Age is a risk factor as the symptoms often begin between 9-15 years of age. Being female increases the risk of scoliosis, and females have a higher risk of worsening spine curvature than males. Especially curves more than 40 degrees, women occupy 90%.

However, if the curve is greater than 40 degrees, it is likely to continue to get worse by at least 2-3 degrees and above each year for the rest of the person's life, a long-term effect of the disease. Over several decades, it can add up to significant progression.

SG Pelvis.jpg

Twisted or Rotated Pelvis

A rotated or tilted pelvis is often a symptom of muscular imbalance, contributing to chronic back pain via an excessively curved spine and increased stress on the back. Individuals with a pelvic tilt also often experience lordosis in the lower back (duck posture), or kyphosis (rounded shoulders and hunched neck) from excessive sitting.

WHAT CAUSES THE PELVIS TO ROTATE AND TWIST?

This postural challenge can be associated with spinal rotation and pelvis obliquity

While a tilted pelvis might not initially cause pain, its structural effect on the rest of the spine eventually contributes to aggravated symptoms, as is in general a sign of poor physical health due to weak and imbalanced muscles. It’s estimated that as many as 85 percent of men and 75 percent of women show signs of a rotated or anterior pelvic tilt.

Pelvis rotation and twisted are common signs of inactivity and poor posture, most attributed to a long sedentary lifestyle.

  • Incorrect seat dimensions

  • Spinal rotation

  • Windsweeping

  • Asymmetrical hip range of movement

  • Hip trauma, dislocation or subluxation

  • Abnormal muscle tone

  • Unilateral foot propulsion for function and independence

  • Standing asymmetrically
